Tenkara is a traditional Japanese style of fly fishing that uses only a rod, line, and fly—no reel required. Fish are landed by controlling pressure with the rod, guiding the fish toward you by raising and tilting the rod back.
Tenkara excels in small mountain streams, where the long rod and light line deliver precise, drag-free presentations. It’s also highly effective in alpine lakes, urban ponds, and calm waters, targeting species such as trout, panfish, and bass.
Simple and intuitive, tenkara is perfect for family trips, beginners, and kids, while offering experienced fly anglers a fun and rewarding challenge.
How It Works
A fixed-length line is attached directly to the rod tip, typically the same length as the rod or up to twice its length. Add about 4 feet of tippet and a fly, and you’re ready to fish.
Casting
Casting is straightforward—simply move the rod back and forth to deliver the fly accurately. Most anglers pick it up in minutes.
Key Feature
Rotating Lillian helps keep the line straight and reduces tangles
